Can't tell you very much about the Model XL 300 except that it was a Semi-Auto, made in 12 or 20 ga., was gas operated, came in various bbl. lengths with or without vented rib, and was made from 1973 to '76. This shotgun has a 2 3/4" chamber and has a fully choke bore. PLEASE ADVISE: The bolt handle in this shotgun bolt is broken but stills functions fine, with a little stiffness when charging.
The ithaca XL's were gas operated, they made ones before that were recoil operated, I have 2 of these! The difference between 300 & 900 is strictly cosmetic, the 900's usually had a gold plated trigger & gold engraving on the receiver. Same goes for the XL models, it was just cosmetics that differed between the 2.

All the XLs were gas autos. That was confirmed from Ron Sharp from Ontario. A serious expert of Ithacas. Still has a huge suppy of old parts. I do have two 900s. One is a 7302 model of the 900. and I have a couple of XLs both the XL300 and the XL900. Here are my two 900s. 1. 900 Close up.

Grab the barrel and try to force it into the action. If it moves, it is recoil and I recommend that you offer $250 and buy it. If it is gas, the barrel won't budge. They sell for more and $295 ain't a bad price. Yet, I prefer the recoil for its reliability. I'd rather have a gas SKB than a Remington 1100.
